When it comes to finding a staple shoe in your wardrobe it’s all about having something that you can wear over and over and over again. And honestly no one does it better than Jeannine, the owner of The Refind Closet in Seattle, Washington. If you’re an avid reader you already know of my obsession.
In almost every Instagram live where they showcase luxury consignment (they have lives six to seven days a week, sometimes twice a day if we’re lucky!) Jeannine is wearing these gorgeous cream platforms and she makes them look so fabulous. It makes me wonder if I have a need for platforms while staying at home postpartum. Maybe I could wear them for diaper changes so I have more height to block accidental pee streams??? No but seriously, I’m convinced I need them because they are so classic.
I love being able to have pieces that are classic, trans-seasonal, and can be worn with so many outfits. And these shoes really are all of these things. They are the Jimmy Choo Heloise Leather Ankle-Strap Platform Sandals. You can find them across multiple retailers and because I’m a rewards girly and because they have so many sizes, I recommend snagging them from Neimans.
When I asked Jeannine about the shoes I was almost surprised that she has several pairs of these heels, but it makes perfect sense because she goes through them wearing them every day. The amount of movement during the lives really seems like she’s running a marathon; and it might actually be one because they’re non-stop for usually three hours or more!
Finding your staple shoe
Figuring out what shoe should be a staple in your closet is something that can really help you get a great cost per wear, hone in on your style, and especially if it’s something that goes with most if not all of your wardrobe–then a staple shoe is something you can just grab and go. What I love about Jeannine’s choice in the Heloise is that they are so flattering on the leg and foot. The ankle strap is slimming and creates dimension, along with the knotted strap over the toes. And most importantly, they are incredibly comfortable.
While a platform might not be the perfect shoe for you, what Jeannine has done is create a signature style through her choice in footwear, and it exudes so much of her style. It’s classic and elegant, with an essence of cool. She’ll throw them on with jeans and a blazer, or dress up with a skirt and top. The bottom line, she always looks incredible. Because I’m so inspired by Jeannine and her perfect staple shoe I want to help everyone find their signature pair.
Things to consider when looking for your staple shoe
1. Understand Your Style
- Identify Key Style Elements: I encourage you to reflect on your wardrobe staples. Are you into minimalism, boho, classic, or edgy styles? The shoe should align with these key elements.
- Versatility is Key: It can be helpful to look for shoes in neutral colors like black, white, beige, or metallics, which can seamlessly blend with most outfits.
2. Focus on Quality and Comfort
- Invest in Quality: A staple shoe should be well-made and durable. Brands like The Row, Khaite, and Jimmy Choo are great designers to start with.
- Comfort is Non-Negotiable: The perfect staple shoe should be comfortable enough for all-day wear, making it a reliable choice for any occasion. Just like Jeannine wearing them every day during the lives!
3. Consider Different Occasions
- Day-to-Night Versatility: Shoes that can transition from casual to more formal settings are great. For example, a sleek pair of loafers or ballet flats.
- Seasonal Adaptability: Find shoes that can work across seasons, such as classic sneakers.
4. Highlight Classic Styles
- Timeless Options: Classic shoe styles like Chelsea boots, white sneakers, or pointed-toe flats never go out of fashion.
- Trendy but Timeless: If you love trends, I suggest opting for styles that have a lasting appeal, like block heels or mule sandals.
5. Provide Outfit Inspiration
- Mix and Match: Create visuals or mood boards showing how one pair of shoes can be styled with multiple outfits. Include examples for casual, work, and evening wear. Drop me a note and I can help you with this!
- Celebrity or Influencer Examples: Fashion icons use staple shoes to define their style, helping people see the potential in their choices. Take inspiration from them to find new ideas!
6. Encourage Personal Expression
- Signature Elements: Choose shoes with subtle, unique details that reflect their personality—like a pop of color, interesting texture, or unique embellishment.
- Confidence in Choice: The best staple shoe is one that makes you feel confident and stylish, no matter the occasion.
