Hoops are one of my favorite accessories to wear. With everything. All year long. We talk a lot about trans-seasonal or evergreen dressing here, and that’s what it’s really about: being able to wear something any day for any occasion. This is the truest proof of having a capsule wardrobe.

Hoops can convey so many messages. We talked about how rings are a fun way to convey style and sentiment, and hoops can do the same thing. How cool!

Getting excited

Most of us come into accessorizing with a preference. We decide that we like gold or silver accents (some of us both), but people don’t always know what style or moreover, what size hoop to wear. But that’s really the most fun. Typically I see women afraid to go to big, but on the other side I see women not wanting to wear micro hoops because they feel like they don’t make enough of a statement–like why wear them if you can’t see them?

What I can tell you is all hoops have a place, they all have a moment. You get to decide how you’ll take them out and show them off to the world, even if that part of the world is in the comfortable corners of your home. There is no reason not to dress for yourself while working from home or having a day in. It all matters and you should focus on how you dress for yourself more than how you dress for other people or even other events. It’s all about how you want to feel.

So where do we begin with choosing the right hoop? First, figuring out what type of metal type is really a great place. Think about the type of jewelry that you wear the most. Are you a gold girly or a silver siren? Depending on your preference and if you haven’t worn a lot of hoops before I recommend going with the metal that you’re most drawn to. Note, we firmly believe in mixing metals here so if you end up finding a hoop that’s in the opposite metal don’t be afraid to give it a try! You’ll know pretty quickly if it’s a fit if you wear it within the first two weeks of buying.

What hoops to purchase

Something I really love when styling is finding a balance, and sometimes that means juxtaposing the opposite style of what your outfit calls for. For example, if your style is more classic I recommend trying a chunky hoop or something that adds some uniqueness to your outfit. The hoops don’t need to be outlandish or totally not you (like something oversized, thick, and with a name in cursive woven into the metal), but they don’t need to be thin and dainty and completely understated. Try a smaller hoop with a unique shape or a thicker metal. If your style is more eclectic and garden child meets new age hippy you could try a large oversized hoop that is super thing, or even a huggie.

How to style hoops

As you know by now, hoops can be worn with anything. And they can make a bad hair day turn around too (one of my favorite tricks). National ad campaign time: Is your hair sad, thin, greasy, or just totally not your vibe today? No worries! Just grab your favorite oversized hoops, put your hair back in a bun and voila! You are a new woman. Terms and conditions may apply.

But in all seriousness hoops can turn your oversized T-shirt and dirty hair day into a cool girl vibe. She’s Free People meets NYC insider who lounges around during the day in large hoops. Is she ready to film content on demand or greet guests even though she spent negative point five seconds getting ready? You bet she is.

Hoops are great compliments to more dressy outfits as well. Let’s say you live in Seattle and you’re gong to a nice event so you’re wearing a dress or a blazer and heels. You’re already more dressed up than 75% of the people you’ll be around so a great way to compliment the environment you’re in is to wear hoops. Sometimes hoops feel a bit unexpected with dressier outfits and I love that.

Another favorite is for my workout ladies. Wear hoops with your workout outfit. When you’re in that pilates class already donning your matching Set Active outfit or rocking the recent Lululemon color-way, throwing on a pair of hoops makes your outfit feel a bit more complete. It gives you the ability to run to coffee after with your friends, or even feel more confident when your muscles are shaking in the mirror.

Hoops are often one of the first accessories I add to my client’s wardrobe. Whether it’s purchasing their first pair or swapping out the lackluster ones they purchased years ago but haven’t worn since. Let me know which styling option you tried out and if you’re loving the suggested pairs above!
