Going shopping is something that we either have to do or get to do, depending on your perspective. Being able to simplify the shopping experience though is something that everyone can benefit from. Whether it’s saving time, money, or a bit of sanity (or all three), being efficient at shopping and acquiring items is something that everyone can benefit from.
Shopping habits made simple
I feel like so many of us are spending more and more time shopping online. I think regardless of the tech involved we have as a species become more accustomed to multi tasking. Whether we’re watching Instagram lives and shopping from places like The Refind, Select Vintage or Nicole Cripe, or you’re following along with Vogue’s shopping lists, or you’re staying up to date through fun little email CTAs in your inbox, or you’re reading your favorite blog and shopping their styling lists (hi:))–there is a lot of place to shop online, and it’s easy to do.
But just because shopping online is so easy it doesn’t mean that’s the go-to for everyone. I’ve heard the justification that shopping online can be easier and trying things on in the light of your home instead on through poor lighting in dressing rooms–plus being able to see how something fits with your wardrobe–is a reason to shop online; but I have also heard that shopping in person lets you experience the clothing in a way that helps you know if it actually fits and is an item you need/want. This can also help reduce the amount of returning that you do.

The simple way of shopping that works for me
Because I live on a island shopping online is what I tend to favor, so much so that going in person anymore almost feels like a treat, like a special outing. But just ask my husband about the amount of packages we return and he’ll tell you that the outcomes of my online shopping are not his favorite. I find that when people shop online they tend to have to return more because of fit and styling issues. I don’t care what retailers are doing to improve online fit assessments, it’s just not the same. (Although Revolve has seen a significant decrease recently with less returns in part due to improving the shopping experience online and enabling customers to more accurately predict the size and fit of an item, it’s still not the same as going in person.)
Regardless of where you shop being more streamlined is so helpful in achieving the outcome you want. Whether it’s leisurely perusing the racks, or quickly adding an item to your cart and checking out, I’ve got the shopping tips for you to help you simplify your experience. Let’s put in less work where we don’t need it, and more time enjoying our fabulous fits.
Online Shopping Tips
- Read Reviews: Always check product reviews and ratings to ensure quality and fit. This helps you avoid returns and disappointments.
- Use Size Guides: Refer to the retailer’s size guide and compare it with your measurements to choose the right size.
- Filter Your Search: Use filters to narrow down options by size, color, price, and style. This makes your search more efficient.
- Check Return Policies: Familiarize yourself with the store’s return and exchange policies before making a purchase, in case you need to return something.
- Look for Discount Codes: Before checking out, search for discount codes or sign up for newsletters to get special offers.
- Create Wishlists: Add items to your wishlist instead of immediately purchasing them. This helps you avoid impulse buys and gives you time to consider the purchase.
- Shop on Reliable Sites: Stick to well-known, reputable websites to avoid scams and ensure the quality of the products.
- Compare Prices: Use price comparison tools or websites to find the best deals on the items you want.
- Track Shipping: Opt for tracked shipping options, so you know where your package is and when to expect it.
- Sign Up for Alerts: Sign up for restock or price drop alerts on items you’re interested in to grab them at the best time.
IRL Shopping Tips
- Go Early: Shop early in the day to avoid crowds and have access to freshly stocked items.
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: Dress in comfortable clothes and shoes that are easy to change in and out of while trying on items.
- Bring a List: Create a shopping list before you go, so you stay focused on what you need and avoid unnecessary purchases.
- Set a Budget: Decide how much you’re willing to spend before you start shopping to avoid overspending.
- Check Store Layouts Online: Look up the store’s layout beforehand if possible, so you can head straight to the sections you need.
- Try on Multiple Sizes: Bring multiple sizes of an item into the fitting room to ensure the best fit without making extra trips.
- Shop Off-Peak Hours: Avoid shopping during peak hours (weekends and late afternoons) to make the experience less stressful.
- Take Breaks: If you’re shopping for an extended period, take breaks to rest and reassess what you’ve bought so far.
- Use a Crossbody Bag: Keep your hands free and your belongings secure with a crossbody bag, making it easier to browse.
- Ask for Help: Don’t hesitate to ask sales associates for assistance. They can help you find sizes, recommend products, or locate items that aren’t on the floor. Look for the person who’s outfit you like the best, they will most likely be able to grok your style and help you more quickly.:)
