The switch to motherhood

Recently a friend told me I should focus more on sharing the behind the scenes when it comes to motherhood and what it’s like to run a business.

I was worried that she was right because often the most vulnerable things connect with people the best, and motherhood is something that has become so precious to me I’m almost afraid to share it. Also where the heck does that fit in a fashion blog and styling business?

It’s a question I’m asking and an answer I’m currently playing around with. While we’re talking about outfit combos and fun ways to style things, so much of what I focus on is how clothes make you feel. That feeling part is everything. It informs the way you show up in the world, both physically and mentally. While we love a label here (I’ll always be honest about that) it’s not about the name brand of the clothes you’re wearing, and it certainly isn’t about the price tag, but it’s about how they make you feel. The most insecure person could be wearing the most expensive and “trendiest” outfit but come across as totally sad. And on the flip side, someone wearing $2 items from Goodwill could be the most fabulous person in the room.

And this paradigm matters so much when you go through a major life change; especially one that’s combined with a massive body change like being postpartum. It’s so easy to wear sweatpants and not get ready for the day. It’s so easy to prioritize your child and your family, and even your home above your physical appearance, but there’s a little magic that happens when you take five minutes and get yourself ready for the day

On the days when I can I do my skin care, brush my hair, and throw on an outfit, and I feel more like an actual person. I literally feel refreshed. And when I walk by a mirror or sit on a video chat I can tell that my aura is different. I look more awake and happy. Even if those two things don’t feel real at the time.

Please know I’m not pretending I get ready everyday. That’s literally not possible. I’m a human being too. Sometimes I don’t get out of my PJs and I question how my husband can be around my breastfeeding b.o. (IYKYK) because I haven’t put on deodorant. The idea is to have a goal. The idea is that if you try and get ready everyday, you’ll get ready most days. But you should never get down on yourself if you either can’t get around to it, or you just can’t on a given day. I think there’s a beauty in intentionality and the summation of a series of good actions.

So how does motherhood and fashion mix? I think quite well. But let’s see how this pans out together.

Only here for the fashion tips? I’ve still got you. This week we’re focusing on making a sweatshirt fabulous. Wear it under a jacket or coat, or under a blazer (one of my personal favs). Tuck it into a pair of jeans or layered over a dress!

Reply to this email and tell me what you’re struggling with. Are you trying to figure out how to get ready in 5 minutes? Are you worried about how to dress your postpartum body? Are you just here for the trends and tips and wondering what to wear this winter? Write me back and let’s chat. <3
