Lily Bloom really likes Boston and flowers.
I’m going to be honest, as I always am, and say that I really didn’t want to read this book; let alone like it. I first discovered Colleen Hoover when I read Verity, which I won’t even spoil that book, I’ll just say–go and read it–I honestly still don’t know exactly what happened in the end because the writing is so good it keep you in suspense until the end and beyond. But this book report is about another novel entirely. One I was sure I wasn’t going to like.
Then I did that thing where you read the first line, then the first paragraph, then page, and then you’re a chapter in and reminding yourself to breath. That’s what we all want in a book right?
I wouldn’t say the writing is magical or would be studied academically, but it speaks to a certain millennial mindset that feels relatable with a pace that is exceptional. I read the whole book in a week (80% of it in fact in one night) which is unheard of for me right now as a new mom. So if that isn’t enough for you to go and read it then I don’t know what is! It also became a major motion picture (side note: that feels hilarious to say, very old-fashioned seeing as how we just call them movies, or at least I do). There was so much media buzz about the movie and Blake Lively so my curiosity finally got the best of me and I purchased the paperback from my local book store. The only way to buy a book as we all know.
Synopsis
Lily Bloom really likes Boston and flowers. She meets a guy on a rooftop and is very interested in him, and he in her. Except he wants a one night stand and she wants forever. She tells him about a guy she dated in high school who was homeless, and they bond over their affinity for telling each other “naked truths.” The get together, things get intense and come up from her past. Some shit goes down, and well…I guess I have to say, you need to read it to find out the ending. Oh, and there is a sequel, I will be going back to Eagle Harbor Books, my local book store and purchasing it.
The fashion
On a fun side note, the floral theme is very on trend. Florals bring in texture and nature and are intrinsically mixed patterned. When the film came out I know Blake really leaned into the floral theme, but it just works. If I was Lily Bloom, or Blake Lively for that matter (lol), I would have played with mixed floral prints, three-dimensional floral patterns, and some really fun floral accessories.
